Shinas Fort

Information

In Shinas, Al Batinah North Governorate, Shinas Fort stands out as one of the most prominent historical landmarks reflecting Oman’s strategic depth and cultural heritage. The fort was originally built during the Nabahina dynasty and later rebuilt under the Al Busaidi state to serve primarily as a defensive stronghold, as well as a place of protection, residence, and administration of the wilayat’s affairs. It housed the court, a school, and a sabla (council hall), making it a testament to the balance between civil and military functions in traditional architecture. Constructed from mud and gravel, the fort has a rectangular design measuring about 100 meters in length, 80 meters in width, and 8 meters in height, surrounded by a solid wall interspersed with defensive openings. It consists of four towers, some rising up to 9 meters high. These towers played a key role in monitoring the coast and defending the wilayat, where five cannons were mounted — four large and one small. Beyond its defensive role, the fort contained rooms for storing weapons and provisions, guardrooms, a mosque, and a central courtyard well, in addition to a prison. It was also distinguished by the presence of a sabla used for community consultations and managing local affairs. The fort witnessed significant historical events, most notably its siege and attack in the early 19th century, which led to the destruction of parts of it before its restoration. In 1984, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism restored the fort, reopening it in 1986 during the reign of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said — may he rest in peace. Today, Shinas Fort is regarded as a remarkable tourist destination, combining historical authenticity with aesthetic value, and offering visitors a unique opportunity to discover Omani military architecture and the pivotal role Shinas played in protecting the coast and facilitating trade.
