Al Hazm Castle
Al-Hazm Fort, built in 1120 AH / 1708 AD during the 18th century by Imam Sultan bin Saif II, is an architectural masterpiece of Omani Islamic design and a living example of Oman’s rich cultural heritage. Located in Rustaq in Al Batinah South Governorate, on flat land beside Wadi Rustaq, the fort offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area, making it a prime attraction for visitors and those seeking authentic Omani history. The fort is renowned for its square layout and massive wooden doors, which were fitted with openings to pour boiling oil or date molasses on intruders — reflecting the ingenuity of traditional defensive engineering. Its ceilings were constructed with cylindrical stone arches without the use of wood. The fort also contains two towers, two gateways, a network of tunnels and secret passages, and rooms once dedicated to teaching the Holy Qur’an and sciences, highlighting its religious and educational role alongside its military function. In addition, the fort houses historic Portuguese and Spanish cannons, reflecting its defensive importance across centuries. Visitors can enjoy exploring the intricate gypsum carvings and decorations, climbing the towers using stairways designed for horses, and discovering the military, religious, and educational functions the fort historically fulfilled. After its restoration in 1996, Al-Hazm Fort remains one of the finest examples of Omani Islamic architecture. A visit offers a unique opportunity to understand Oman’s culture, history, and architectural artistry, making it an essential destination for anyone interested in the Sultanate’s rich heritage.
