Information

Nizwa Fort is one of the finest architectural masterpieces created by the Omanis in the field of defensive architecture and remains one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Sultanate of Oman. It was built during the reign of Imam Sultan bin Saif bin Malik Al-Ya’rubi (1649–1679) in the mid-17th century. The fort is renowned for its majestic circular design, rising 34 meters high with a diameter of 45 meters, making it a unique structure unlike other forts scattered across the country. Its walls were constructed from stone and the traditional Omani gypsum known as sarooj, and it was equipped with numerous cannon openings, enabling 360-degree fire coverage, which made it an impregnable fortress. Its base is considered one of the marvels of ancient Omani construction. It was filled with stones up to 15 meters high, while other accounts suggest it extends 30 meters underground, granting the fort extraordinary stability against any attack. Visitors ascend the fort through a narrow H-shaped staircase passing through seven heavily fortified doors with complex defensive openings — a striking example of the military engineering genius of its builders. Beyond its military function, the fort also served as a center of local governance and the residence of the Imam and his family. It included prisons and various facilities, reflecting its administrative and social role in Nizwa’s life. Adjacent to it lies the traditional Nizwa Souq, famous for its handicrafts, making a visit to the fort a holistic cultural experience that combines history, architecture, and living heritage. Today, Nizwa Fort opens its doors to visitors from all over the world, narrating the story of Oman’s authenticity and rich history, and offering a glimpse into the ingenuity of the ancestors in the arts of construction and fortification.
