Bibi Maryam Mausoleum
Overlooking the town of Qalhat the mausoleum called ‘Bibi Miriam’, after its builder, has survived earthquakes, invasions and the ravages of time since 1311AD. Built from Coral and Limestone, covered in Stucco and decorated with blue Persian tiles it attracted praise from all who wrote about it. The style is a familiar cube shaped building surmounted by a dome, which was used from Iraq down through Iran. The interior was decorated with squinches and simple muqarmas decoration to overlook the vault below. Bibi Miriam’s husband, Baba ad Din Ayaz, who was the Governor of Qalhat and later Hormuz, predeceased her around 1311AD and it is possible both were buried in the famous mausoleum on her death, before 1329AD.
