Dhofar

The Land of Frankincense

Information

Dhofar, situated in the southernmost region of the Sultanate of Oman, is known for its distinct natural and climatic diversity. It includes vast sandy beaches, tranquil deserts, fertile plains, beautiful green mountains, and historic archaeological monuments. The Khareef season, which lasts from June to September, is a particularly wonderful time to visit. During this period, the plains and mountains are covered in mist and light showers, creating an enthralling natural scene. Known as the "Land of Frankincense," Dhofar boasts a wealth of historical and cultural monuments connected to the frankincense trade, including the ancient cities of Sumhuram and Al-Baleed, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. In addition, the governorate is home to a large number of mountain villages and traditional marketplaces that showcase Omani hospitality and the native way of life. Visitors can enjoy a range of experiences in Dhofar, from desert safaris and relaxation on its turquoise beaches, such the well-known Mughsail Beach, to cave and wadi adventures. In the cool autumn air, annual festivals honor Omani culture, the arts, and cuisine, especially the Khareef Dhofar Tourism Festival. The governorate has excellent connection to contemporary transportation systems, being reachable by road from all around Oman or by air through Salalah International Airport. Hotels, resorts, shopping malls, and entertainment venues are just a few of the many integrated tourism services available.
