Al Mirani Fort
Al Mirani Fort, located in Muscat Governorate, is a Portuguese fortress that stands as a living witness to long phases of Omani history. The fort was originally a tower before the arrival of the Portuguese, who rebuilt it in 1588 AD, adding fortifications, cannon platforms, armories, and residences for commanders — transforming it into a fully fortified stronghold that dominated Muscat’s harbor. Later, the fort underwent significant phases of development. It was restored during the Ya’rubis era to continue its defensive and cultural role, and again during the Al Busaidi dynasty, when expansions were added that gave the fort its current form, reflecting the strength of Omani sovereignty. Today, Al Mirani Fort is no longer just a military stronghold, but a vibrant cultural and tourist destination. It features a weapons museum displaying Omani and Portuguese models, exhibits of traditional battle attire, an open-air theater, and interactive digital experiences that narrate the fort’s history from its establishment to the liberation of Muscat from colonial forces. Visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the Sea of Oman and observe towers and ships carved into the rocks through telescopes installed at the site. Blending rich history with modern tourist services, Al Mirani Fort offers visitors a unique experience — one that combines the spirit of the past with the beauty of the present, and stands as a symbol of Omani strength and unity across the ages.
